Durio testudinarum
Durio testudinarius (also frequently written as testudinarum), popularly known as the tortoise durian, is a rare durian species that is highly difficult to encounter in its natural habitat.
This plant grows in the depths of untouched primary forests, demands high levels of humidity, and requires approximately 15 to 20 years to bear fruit. In terms of utilization, the fruit is safe for consumption but less than ideal for commercial scale due to its low productivity (it does not bear fruit as frequently as common durians) and its relatively small portion of flesh.
Nevertheless, its biological uniqueness—where the fruit grows protruding from the base of the lower trunk near the ground—makes the tortoise durian a highly captivating tourist attraction for foreign travelers wishing to see and taste it firsthand.
